Description
It was 1672, the Sun King, Louis the XIV, king of France is threatening to invade the young Dutch Republic. Like many Dutch patriots of the time, Johannes Vermeer has enlisted in his city militia, ready to defend it against the French troops. He joined the Orange Company, whose members were all from the same quarter in Delft (the Oude Langeendijk). They have been doing some basic training and Jan is now back at her home, trying to rest from an exhausting day. Beatrix one of his daughters has poured some chilled white wine for him in a berkemeyer glass that she is holding. Vermeer looks at her, his thought are of concern for what it seems an unavoidable war.It is NOT laughing matter.
Inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s “Officer and Laughing Girl”, c. 1657 at The Frick Collection, NY.
